Plot hatched to force censure vote over MAGA Rep's racist remark

0

House Democrats are plotting possible ways to force a vote censuring Rep. Randy Fine (R-FL) after he made a social media post claiming that Muslims are worth less than dogs.

This comes after House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) issued a statement proclaiming that, "House Democrats will not let the racist and bigoted behavior of Randy Fine go unchecked. Accountability is coming to all of these sick extremists when the gavels change hands in November, if not sooner."

According to Axios, "Fine's recent comments on social media saying 'the choice between dogs and Muslims is not a difficult one' have drawn intense backlash from colleagues, including one fellow House Republican," and "while the increasingly irreverent and partisan use of censure in recent years has frustrated lawmakers, some progressives say this is a rare case where use of the tool is genuinely warranted."

"We cannot stand idly by as Muslim Americans are described as less than dogs by a sitting member. Many of my colleagues feel similarly," said Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA), while Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI) said, "I usually hate censure resolutions against members, but I've never seen someone deserve one more."

However, at least one Democrat is fearful the measure is a waste of time; Rep. Greg Landsman (D-OH) told Axios, "Ricky, or whatever his name is, just wants the attention. He says obscene, hateful things for attention."

Censure votes have become common recently, and sometimes even occur within a party, with Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) trying to push a censure vote against Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL), a fellow Republican accused of domestic abuse.
