Collaboration to accelerate lithium metal-based battery technology for next-gen EVs

0

Ampere, the EV and software pure player from Renault Group, has entered into a Joint Development Agreement with Basquevolt, developers of next-generation solid-state battery technology. The agreement will accelerate the development and validation of Lithium-metal-based batteries for future EVs

Basquevolt’s lithium-metal battery technology has the potential to deliver transformative improvements in energy density compared to today’s liquid-electrolyte lithium-ion batteries. By combining the advantages of polymer electrolytes with advanced anodes, the technology could enable compact, lightweight battery packs with enhanced thermal stability and fast-charging capabilities, key attributes for the next generation of electric mobility.

This collaboration highlights the importance of strategic partnerships in advancing battery innovation, combining science, scalable engineering, and cost efficiency. Ampere and Basquevolt are aiming to pave the way for the commercial deployment of lithium-metal-based battery technology in EVs.

Pablo Fernández, CEO of Basquevolt, said, “Entering this next phase with Ampere marks a major milestone in our mission to bring polymer electrolyte technology closer to the mass market.”

Nicolas Racquet, VP Vehicle and Powertrain Engineering, Ampere, said, “Together, we are focused on validating performance in real-world automotive conditions and accelerating the transition to next-gen EV batteries that meet the evolving needs of our customers.”

After more than 12 months of collaboration, Basquevolt has demonstrated that its technology can achieve very high energy density while reducing overall battery-pack costs. Due to its polymer electrolyte, battery cells can be produced through a simpler, more efficient manufacturing process. This will result in approximately 30% lower capital investment per GWh in a conventional gigafactory and 30% less energy used per kWh produced.
