Winter Storm Warnings Announced Following 38 Inches of Snow, 75 mph Winds

0

March brings to mind bright flowers and the first days of spring, but on Tuesday, March 1, the National Weather Service (NWS) continued to issue warnings for severe weather in areas of the country.

The NWS has announced new winter storm warnings, watches and advisories for areas of the Northeast that just dug themselves out of the blizzard of 2026, as well as areas of the Midwest already dealing with extreme cold weather.

Northeast and Midwest Facing for Fresh Snow, After Getting Hit With Up to 38 Inches

Getting a few additional inches of snow wouldn't be a big deal, expect that the Northeast just recovered from the blizzard of the year. According to research from the NWS, some areas received as much as 37.9 inches of snow during the storm, with that number being recorded in Warwick, Rhode Island. Other areas had dangerous winds, including 83 mph in Nantucket, Massachusetts, and 77 mph in Wellfleet, Massachusetts.

According to a report from the experts at AccuWeather, a "large story" will take shape on Tuesday, March 3, in the Midwest and Northeast Tuesday, with left over snow, ice and rain heading from the Midwest to the Northeast.

This storm will be more north than the previous blizzard, hitting areas of the Great Lakes and Northeast. Areas of upstate New York and central New England are expected to get an inch or two of snow and sleet."

The Good News is That New Snowfall Won't Last Song, Weather Experts Say

"It'll feel more like January to start the week in the Northeast with snow and ice, but by the weekend it'll feel like May," AccuWeather stated in a post on X.

But, that doesn't mean all is well. "As temperatures rise into midweek across the Northeast, the risk of ice jams and related river flooding can become a concern, heightening infrastructure and logistics concerns," they tell Men's Journal in a statement.

The first day of spring falls on March 20, and according to the Farmer's Almanac, "In the Northern Hemisphere, the spring equinox occurs when the Sun crosses the celestial equator going south to north," they state.

According to the NOAA's eight to 14 day forecast, warmer weather is on the way for the U.S. The Weather Prediction Center projects warmer than average temperatures for the Northeast and normal weather in the Midwest from March 10 to 16.
