Pat Nevin says Man Utd haven't progressed due to "Galactico" strategy, he seems clueless
Former Chelsea star Pat Nevin has said that Manchester United have not progressed over the past few seasons due to the ‘Galactico’ strategy.
The Red Devils have been one of the in-form clubs since the turn of the year, and they are currently third in the Premier League with 51 points.
The club have picked up 19 points from seven games since Michael Carrick took interim charge and look on course to qualify for the Champions League.
Amidst this, there has been unwarranted criticism from Nevin, who has said the Red Devils’ focus on big-name signings has proved costly.
The former Blues winger added that Arsenal are an example of a squad without Galacticos, and United have been held back by their transfer policy.
He said in an interview with BestBettingSites: “I think it’s always been a mistake. Part of Manchester United’s problem for quite some time has been that Galactico idea. Have a look around — that’s not what the top teams are doing. Nobody’s doing that anymore.
“If you’re Real Madrid and you can afford to get ten of them in, that’s fine, but you’re not going to do that because there are too many other teams who can fight and battle with you financially. You need to build a group now.
“That’s just the way it is. For all that I think Arsenal are a fabulous side, an amazing squad, easily the best squad in terms of depth, they’re not building a Galactico squad.
“Even Manchester City — and you’ve got to say there’s no bigger Galactico than Erling Haaland — he’s the one in world football just now alongside Mbappe. But he’s not been asked to play like a Galactico.
“He’s been asked to get back in gear and work his socks off, and he’s doing it. So that whole Galactico thing — I think some clubs can live with it. But I actually think it’s held Manchester United back for a while.”
Nevin seems clueless with his comments on United
United have been guilty of paying over the odds on attacking acquisitions in the past. Jadon Sancho and Antony are prime examples. However, the club have moved on from that policy.
There has been an obvious change in transfer strategy since INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe took control of club operations. The Red Devils have had good success in the transfer market since the summer of 2024
Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui have been brilliant defensive signings. Patrick Dorgu was relatively unknown when he arrived last year, but he has been a revelation under Carrick’s tutelage.
The Dane has transformed his career since becoming a wide attacking player for the club.
Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko were signed to bolster the attack last summer. All three of them have made notable goal contributions in the Champions League pursuit.
Meanwhile, Leny Yoro is a player with immense potential and should improve with experience.
Compared to the rest, Manuel Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee have not quite met expectations, but both are relatively young and talented. United could recoup most of their investment by selling them.
Hence, United are moving on the right trajectory, and Nevin seems clueless. The Red Devils are no longer chasing big names or so-called Galacticos, and thorough analysis is conducted before signings.
