'Another knot for Trump' as new polling shows 'peril' for president: report
Americans have serious doubts about President Donald Trump's war against Iran, according to the latest polling.
The 79-year-old president's decision to join Israel in a military campaign against the Middle Eastern power lacks public support less than a week into what his administration calls Operation Epic Fury, reported The Hill.
"The lack of public support spells political peril for President Trump, even as he enthuses about how well American actions are going, celebrates the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and suggests that U.S. operations against the Islamic Republic will likely only last four weeks or so," the outlet reported.
Only 27 percent of Americans by Reuters/Ipsos right after the hostilities began supported the actions, while 43 percent disapproved and 29 percent were unsure, and CNN/SSRS poll found 41 percent approved and 59 percent disapproved, and an Economist/YouGov poll released Wednesday found 32 percent support and 45 percent opposition.
"The polling data shows a predictably massive chasm between how Democrats and Republicans see the Iran attack," The Hill reported, "but a strong plurality of independents in all three of the polls mentioned above disapprove."
The president could be facing long-term political trouble, because popular support for overseas conflicts tends to wane over time.
"Adding another knot for Trump, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan severely drained the nation’s appetite for foreign wars generally," The Hill reported. "Some of the president’s supporters rallied to his Make America Great Again (MAGA) banner in the first place because they believed he shared their skepticism about such bloody entanglements."
