EU says empowering Afghan women key to country’s economic resilience

0

The European Union’s representative in Afghanistan said Afghan women play a decisive and irreplaceable role in shaping the country’s future.

Veronika Boskovic Pohar said on Sunday, marking International Women’s Day, that empowering women economically is not only a matter of rights but also essential for Afghanistan’s economic resilience.

She stressed in a message on X that strengthening women’s participation in the economy is critical for long-term stability and sustainable development in the country.

Her remarks come as Afghan women continue to face major restrictions on education, employment and participation in public life.

Since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, girls and women have been barred from attending secondary schools and universities and have faced wide restrictions on working in many sectors.

These policies have forced many families to lose important sources of income and have sharply reduced women’s participation in Afghanistan’s social and economic life.

International organizations, including the European Union, have repeatedly warned that excluding women from education and economic activity could worsen inequality and hinder Afghanistan’s long-term development.
