France says women in Afghanistan face systematic rights violations

0

France’s representative told the United Nations Security Council on Monday that the Taliban have stripped Afghan women of their rights, effectively turning them into second-class citizens.

The French envoy said the Taliban’s systematic violations of women’s rights could amount to gender persecution and crimes against humanity, stressing such actions must not go unpunished.

He also criticized the Taliban’s newly introduced penal code, saying it further restricts women’s fundamental rights and deepens their isolation from society, turning discrimination into an accepted norm.

France’s representative also warned that Afghan territory is being used against neighboring countries and called on the Taliban to take concrete steps against terrorist groups operating in the country.

During the same United Nations Security Council meeting, Russia and China argued that continued engagement with the Taliban could help bring gradual change in Afghanistan.

However, the French envoy questioned the effectiveness of such engagement, noting that countries including France had already interacted with the Taliban through the Doha Process.

He said despite these diplomatic efforts, the Taliban continue to introduce new restrictive measures and violate international norms, raising concerns among the international community.
