Winter brings a surprising sight in parts of the southeastern United States. Alligators appear stuck in frozen lakes, but this is a clever survival tactic. They enter a state called brumation, slowing their bodies and conserving energy. This allows them to breathe through small holes in the ice, a behavior known as ice snorkeling.
