Like Dinosaurs, Pro-Life Democrats are Practically Extinct

The mainstream media would like you to believe that being pro-life is always a political disadvantage.

I wish reporters would spend a typical day with me, as I field request after request for endorsements from our political action committee.

Pennsylvania is a decidedly purple state. Yes, some areas are bright blue—Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, for instance. But broad swaths of the Keystone State are a distinct shade of red. And in those parts, the pro-life message resonates.

The one thing that has changed in the Commonwealth I call home is the near total disappearance of Democrat public officials who are pro-life.

It used to be that courageous Democrats would speak out on behalf of preborn babies and their mothers. These Pennsylvania House floor speeches were legendary and inspiring. The late, great Governor Robert Casey Sr. fought valiantly for the rights of unborn children. He also helped to establish a first-of-its-kind program to fund pregnancy help centers throughout Pennsylvania which became a model for the rest of the nation.

But sadly today, we have only one reliable pro-life Democrat vote in the entire 203-member Pennsylvania House of Representatives. And the Democrat Governor, Josh Shapiro, wiped out funding for pregnancy help centers after decades of their reliable, compassionate service.

The pro-life Democrat has gone the way of the dinosaur in Pennsylvania. It’s a shame. Both political parties should be dedicated to protecting the rights of the most vulnerable among us. And there is no one more vulnerable than the unborn child.
