Afghanistan U-17 Face Turkmenistan Today in Key CAFA Clash
Afghanistan’s under-17 national football team face Turkmenistan on Tuesday in their second match of the CAFA U-17 Championship, with the side looking to revive its campaign after an opening defeat.
The regional tournament is being held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and features five Central Asian teams in a round-robin format.
The match is scheduled to kick off at 4:30 p.m. Kabul time, and carries added importance for Afghanistan after losing their first game to Kyrgyzstan. Another setback would leave the team under greater pressure heading into its remaining fixtures against stronger regional opponents.
Turkmenistan will also be seeking a valuable result as both teams try to strengthen their position in the standings. Analysts expect a closely contested match, with both sides aware that early points could prove decisive in a short-format youth tournament.
The CAFA U-17 Championship is viewed as an important development platform for young footballers in the region, giving emerging players international exposure and competitive experience at an early stage. This year’s edition runs from April 4 to April 14 and includes Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
Afghanistan are also trying to improve on last year’s showing against Turkmenistan, after losing 1-0 in their most recent recorded meeting. That result may add extra motivation as the team looks to bounce back and stay in contention in this year’s competition.
Youth tournaments such as the CAFA Championship play a key role in preparing players for future AFC and international competitions. For Afghanistan, such matches are particularly important because they provide rare structured regional competition and a pathway for young players to gain high-level match experience.
Tuesday’s match could shape the direction of Afghanistan’s tournament. A win would revive hopes of a stronger finish, while another loss would leave little room for error in the remaining fixtures.
