Trump agrees to two-week pause in Iran strikes after Pakistan talks

0

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he had agreed to suspend bombing and military strikes on Iran for two weeks after talks involving Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and army chief Asim Munir.

Trump said the pause was conditional on Iran keeping the Strait of Hormuz fully, immediately and safely open, describing the move as a bilateral ceasefire aimed at creating space for diplomacy.

He also said Washington had received a 10-point proposal from Iran and suggested the plan could provide a workable basis for negotiations to end the war.

Pakistan had earlier pushed for a two-week ceasefire, with officials saying the aim was to buy time for diplomacy and prevent a wider regional escalation.

The decision came after Trump had threatened large-scale strikes on Iranian infrastructure if no deal emerged, raising fears of a broader confrontation across the Gulf.

Pakistan, along with other regional actors, has in recent days played an increasingly visible mediation role between Washington and Tehran, seeking to keep diplomatic channels open.

The Strait of Hormuz remains central to the crisis because it handles a major share of global oil shipments, making any disruption a serious international economic and security concern.

While the two-week pause may reduce immediate pressure, its durability will likely depend on whether diplomacy can produce a broader political understanding between the United States and Iran.
