Mount Bachelor, Oregon Is Closing Early, Spring Skiing Cut Short
After a consistently challenging ski season for resorts across the West, another domino has fallen.
John Merriman, the president and general manager of Mount Bachelor, Oregon, recently announced that the ski resort will close on April 19, 2026, more than a month before operations ended in 2025 on May 26.
“Our team has done just such a fantastic job keeping everything together, but we’re having [a] really difficult time keeping snow at the base,” he said.
The post, shared on social media, added that this season brought historically low snowfall. Across Oregon, mountain snowpacks remain well below normal.

While a recent storm brought some much-needed wintry weather to Mount Bachelor, the resort noted in an Instagram comment that “Unfortunately a foot of snow this time of year doesn’t do a ton to build our base given warm temps and rain in the forecast this week.”
Despite the heartache for skiers, Mount Bachelor hopes to go out with a bang. Closing weekend now coincides with RendezVan, a festival set to be held at the resort between April 16 and April 19 with live music, food, and drink.
“We hope to see you all here,” said Merriman. “We are so thankful for all our passholders this year. They have kept us going.”

Another of Oregon’s last-standing ski resorts, Mt. Hood Meadows, plans to close a few days earlier on April 12. Timberline Lodge, which is known for its summer skiing, is expected to stay open longer. That resort is now selling a spring pass for $219 that’s good through May 25.
The overall situation in Oregon mirrors that of other western states, which saw a record-breaking heat dome in March. The toasty temperatures came after a season that had already seen less snow than usual, prompting many mountains to close earlier than usual.
But in some places, the ski season still has legs. Near Banff, Alberta, Lake Louise and Banff Sunshine Village have multi-foot snow bases and plan to stay open into May. For now, Mammoth Mountain, California, has its eyes on Memorial Day or later.
Our thinking? If you're in the right spot, it's just getting good.
