‘False alarm’ leads to evacuation of McGill’s Bronfman Building, police say

0

Montreal police evacuated McGill’s Bronfman Building on the university’s downtown campus Friday evening after receiving calls about “gunshot noises,” but confirmed the incident was a false alarm.

A 911 call was made around 5:35 p.m. about gunshot noises inside the McGill University building on Sherbrooke St., near Metcalfe St., according to Montreal police spokesperson Johany Charland. The incident prompted an investigation, with reports of several police cars near the building and heavily armed officers inside.

When officers arrived on the scene, Charland said the entire building was evacuated to ensure everyone’s safety, and later confirmed nobody was injured.

“One person still called to say they heard gunshots. So we don’t take that lightly,” Charland told The Gazette.

By 7:45 p.m., police investigators confirmed the incident was a “false alarm.”

The incident at McGill occurred around the same time as a lockdown at the University of Ottawa. That lockdown was lifted as of around 7:10 p.m., and one person was arrested in connection with the event. There were no injuries.

Montreal police confirmed the incidents at the two universities do not appear to be connected.
