Iran Delegation Arrives In Pakistan For US Talks
Iran’s delegation arrives in Islamabad for US talks as ceasefire tensions persist, with Tehran demanding preconditions and mistrust shaping negotiations.
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf led an Iranian delegation to Islamabad on Friday for high-stakes talks with the United States, as tensions remain high despite a fragile ceasefire.
The negotiations come amid deep mistrust, with Tehran insisting that key commitments, including a ceasefire in Lebanon and the release of frozen Iranian assets, must be implemented before formal discussions begin.
The visit follows a two-week ceasefire announced by Donald Trump after six weeks of conflict, which halted U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran but failed to ease broader regional tensions.
Despite the truce, Iran has maintained pressure in the Strait of Hormuz, contributing to disruptions in global energy supplies, while parallel fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon continues.
Iran’s foreign ministry said the delegation, which includes Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, consists of around 70 members, including technical experts in economic, security and political fields, highlighting the significant of the talks.
Ghalibaf said Tehran approaches the talks with goodwill but does not trust Washington, adding that Iran is ready to reach an agreement if its rights are fully respected.
The White House has not directly responded to Iran’s preconditions, though Trump said in a social media post that negotiations remain Iran’s only viable path forward.
Meanwhile, U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who will lead the American delegation, expressed cautious optimism, while warning that Washington would not accept any attempts to delay or manipulate the process.
Pakistan is hosting the talks after playing a key role in brokering the ceasefire, aiming to facilitate direct engagement and prevent further escalation in the region.
Analysts say the outcome of the Islamabad talks could determine whether the fragile truce holds or gives way to renewed conflict, as deep divisions persist on key issues.
