Beloved Action Movie Joins Streaming Five Years After Record-Breaking Box Office Run

0

Spider-Man: No Way Home is finally arriving on Disney Plus. The movie had previously been absent from the MCU's streaming home due to licensing disputes with Sony.

The action sequel, directed by Jon Watts and starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield, marked the third installment in the MCU's Spider-Man trilogy and brought all three live-action Peter Parkers together for the first time.

No Way Home was an enormous box office success, pulling in a staggering $1.9 billion worldwide against a reported budget of $200 million. The film also received overwhelmingly positive reviews, with general audiences and professional critics agreeing that it marked a clear turning point for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The film was a direct result of a landmark deal between Marvel and Sony, who had been battling for control of the legal rights to Spider-Man for decades. Marvel previously sold the rights to Sony in 1999, giving them total control over the character's films and television appearances.

Disney Plus has been the official home of the MCU since the platform's creation in 2019. The entire franchise has been available on the streaming service since it launched, with the exception of two Spider-Man movies, The Incredible Hulk, and various others that had standing agreements with Netflix. Over the years, those movies all made their way to Disney Plus—and only Spider-Man: No Way Home was left.

Previously, Spider-Man:No Way Home was available to stream on Starz in the United States—but its transition to Disney Plus will hopefully open it up to a much wider audience. Or at least, those few who didn't see it during its historic theatrical run.

Spider-Man: No Way Home was widely credited as the first blockbuster success in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was the first movie to cross $1 billion since the wave of theater closures around the world, and the first movie since 2019's Avengers: Endgame to break into the Top 10 highest-grossing movies of all time.
