A Recently-Revived Sitcom Will End for Good This Season

0

Bad news for fans of Lisa Kudrow's The Comeback — the third season, picking up 12 years after we last saw fictional star Valerie Cherish, will be the last one ever.

The HBO series first aired in 2005, shortly after Kudrow's longtime stint as Phoebe Buffay on Friends (1994-2004) ended, making her a household name for over a decade. The series followed Cherish, a once-celebrated comedy actress who spent a decade out of the spotlight, attempting to revive her career, only to find out Hollywood has moved on without her.

A second season premiered in 2014, following the show's initial cancellation in 2005, seeing a still down-and-out Valerie break into the world of reality TV, mainly Bravo, Andy Cohen-led shows à la The Real Housewives franchise — only to find her life documented in a not nearly such a glamorous way.

Now, Season 3, which began in late March, follows Valerie as she attempts to navigate a now AI-obsessed Hollywood landscape. After some initial luck seeing the star cast in a new series, she quickly discovers the show is entirely written by an AI bot.

Ahead of the premiere of Season 3, HBO confirmed the new episodes would be Valerie's final chapter. "The third and final season of the HBO Original comedy series The Comeback from Michael Patrick King and Lisa Kudrow, debuts Sunday, March 22 at 10:30 p.m. ET on HBO, and will be available to stream on HBO Max," a press release from the network states.

"New episodes of the eight-episode season will debut weekly leading up to the series finale on Sunday, May 10," the statement added.

Kudrow is joined by new cast members Andrew Scott (Fleabag, Wake Up Dead Man), Abbi Jacobson (Broad City, A League of Their Own), and John Early (30 Rock, Eternity). Additionally, her real-life son, Julian Stern will appear in The Comeback Season 3 in an upcoming role. When Kudrow was filming Friends season 4, her real-life pregnancy with Julian was written into the show, with Phoebe carrying triplets as part of a surrogacy for her brother and his wife.
