"It's a strange idea, really, to go stirring up all these dead things." For decades after the Second World War, mainstream French culture felt much the same as the narrator of Patrick Modiano's novel Ring Roads. With the economy soaring, the consoling myths of the Resistance locked in place, and France a high-fashion exporter of formalistic, anti-historical schools of thought and art, the bitter shame and division of the Occupation years could be safely buried.
Workplaces, which account for so much of our waking lives, receive nothing like enough attention in fiction. Or rather, certain kinds of workplaces go ignored. Back in the day, David Lodge told us more about the life of the campus lecturer than I, for one, needed to know. Thanks to the detective novel industry, we all boast an impressive knowledge of a pathologist's working routine. Ian McEwan gave us a day-in-the-life of a brain surgeon. But how many of us have any idea what a quantity surveyor, or a housing officer, actually does? Читать дальше...
Where will you be on the 12th of August? On holiday? At work? Or will you be one of the few thousand people – equivalent to two thirds of an Old Trafford crowd – for whom "The Glorious Twelfth" is the start of the grouse-shooting season?
"You owe everything to your name, boy." If Mark Antony thought he would wound Octavian with this slur, he was surely mistaken. Because Octavian, who had taken the name of his adoptive father, Caesar, and added it to his own, and who would later acquire the previously unused honorific title, Augustus, knew all about the power of names, and indeed the power of appearance compared with reality.

The 18th century was a pivotal time in the development of an interest in nature, especially in Britain. Two of these four books are specifically about nature in the 18th century and another devotes a fair proportion to the period. Why? Because as Susannah Gibson writes in Animal, Vegetable, Mineral? (OUP, £16.99), "some very strange creatures became known to naturalists... better tools like microscopes enabled naturalists to make more minute examinations of natural objects... and Enlightenment... At over 700 pages long and littered with graphic descriptions of the physical and sexual abuse endured by the central character, Jude, as a child –and the trauma he suffers thereafter – in theory, Hanya Yanagihara's beast of a second novel shouldn't work.
The focus on Indian cities have often borne out the truth of Nobel laureate Amartya Sen's insightful observation that when it comes to India the British give the impression that they have authored the country. So books on Indian cities concentrate on the four great cities that were either developed by the British, Bombay, Calcutta and Madras, or radically altered, Delhi.
I don't recommend looking up Sweet Caress + photos on your search engine. It starts off harmlessly enough with kittens and horses but rapidly deteriorates. My excuse is that I was trying to find the origin of the pictures William Boyd uses in this latest novel. His subject, Amory Clay, is a photographer at a time when it was not an altogether respectable career for a woman (the character is born in 1908).
Where are you now and what can you see?
As the title suggests, this is a book with the ambition to be not just another history of modern France, but the history. In many respects, it succeeds. Jonathan Fenby positively gallops through a comprehensive account of France from 1789 until now. He has not selected only the juicy bits – the Revolution, Napoleon, the First World War, De Gaulle, 1968. He fills in what happens in between so that events are joined up and the narrative complete.
'Confessions of the Lioness' is inspired by fact. Hunters were called in response to lion attacks that coincided with the visit of environmental field officers during a program of prospecting in Mozambique. "Gradually", Mia Couto writes in his author's note, "the hunters realised that the mysteries they were having to confront were merely symptoms of social conflicts". The problem with the ensuing novel is that this realisation is not gradual. The second problem is that though this could be remedied by dramatisation, it isn't. Читать дальше...
