China, “a socialist state under the democratic dictatorship of the people”, is in a state of transition today that outsiders would hardly be in a position to fathom. Perhaps those in power would themselves not have too clear a picture. Whether the information that is freely available provides a realistic analysis of the existing situation is anything but certain. The present work draws from both personal impressions as well as reports. Most importantly, it provides the tools for obtaining a more exact picture, based on the theoretical analysis it undertakes.
