Trump renews offer to allow Canada to join the United States
He said such a move could significantly reduce Canadians' spending on taxes and military protection.
"No one can answer why we subsidize Canada to the tune of over $100,000,000 a year? Makes no sense! Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State. They would save massively on taxes and military protection. I think it is a great idea. 51st State!!!" Trump wrote on his page in the social network Truth Social.
Earlier, Trump jokingly stated that Canada could become the 51st state of the United States, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau - its governor. The president-elect also promised to introduce 25-percent tariffs on Canadian goods if Ottawa does not reduce the flow of migrants and drugs into the United States.
The Canadian authorities reacted sharply to Trump's threats. Thus, the head of the Canadian province of Ontario, Doug Ford, promised to stop electricity supplies to the American states of Michigan, New York and Wisconsin if Washington introduces tariffs.
