Lack of daylight increases risk of mental health disorders, scientists find

0

Tengrinews.kz - Researchers from the University of Southampton have highlighted the critical role light plays in mood regulation and the development of mental health disorders, according to The Conversation.

The study revealed that disruptions in circadian rhythms caused by insufficient daylight or exposure to bright light at night increase the risk of depression, bipolar disorder, and other mental health conditions.

Analysis of brain activity data revealed that daylight significantly impacts brain regions responsible for mood and alertness. Sunlight influences serotonin levels, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood.

Conversely, exposure to bright light at night destabilizes circadian rhythms, intensifying symptoms of anxiety, depression, and other disorders by disrupting biological clocks, the researchers noted.

To mitigate these risks, scientists recommend avoiding bright light at night, ensuring sufficient sunlight exposure during the day, and maintaining a consistent sleep-wake schedule.

Previously, a Kazakh doctor discussed the impact of time change on health.
