Caspian sea’s scale was captured on video

0

Tengrinews.kz - Videographer Nurken Tazhibay showcased the scale of the Caspian Sea's shrinking by filming a pier on the waterfront in Aktau.
The photographer captured a pier on the 7th microdistrict of Aktau's waterfront, which has lost its purpose over the past few years. People can no longer dive or fish from it, as the structure, which once extended into the sea, is now entirely on land, located tens of meters away from the water.

The Caspian Sea, the largest enclosed body of water in the world, is a vital resource for more than 270 million people across five countries—Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkmenistan, Iran, and Azerbaijan. However, the sea is under threat due to rapid shallowing: in some areas of Kazakhstan, the coastline has retreated by 18 kilometers, and the water level continues to drop at an average rate of 70 centimeters per year.
Earlier, NASA Landsat satellites managed to capture a photo of the Chigil-Deniz Island in the Caspian Sea. It is referred to as a "ghost" or wandering island, read more details here.
