Men’s Captain’s Weekly News 3rd March 2025

Gentlemen

There were meant to be three competitions in the last week, but we only managed two. Unfortunately, the weather roles were reversed as we suffered some very unpleasant weather on Friday whilst Northern Europe were basking, well almost, in some sunshine. February is proving to be a quiet month for golfers on the Costa del Golf, but with Easter six weeks away there is no doubt we are going to see a lot more people here.

MEN’S Competition Tuesday February 25th

So, this Tuesday we had 22 players participating including 4 guests. One “guest” was a long-term member, Theo Quick (whom most of you would know) was aptly named. He was travelling in his motorhome and found an opportunity to return to San Roque for a few rounds. He was with his wife, past Lady Captain Irene Baltus, who played in the Ladies competition. Only one player scored better than their handicap with Ciaran Lally scoring 37 points and a gross 72. Well played Ciaran. Michael Gaarde was second with 36 points. Frank Breuer third with 35 points and he also managed to pick up three prizes.

MEN’S Competition Thursday Andalucia Day February 27th

The Annual Andalucía Day competition took place with 33 players taking to the fairways of San Roque on a bright and sunny day. Little did we know exactly what was to come. With more than half the field finishing with 30 points or more there was some good scoring at the top of the leaderboard. Jim Jenet who managed to pick up the tissue on Tuesday showed just how fickle golf can be. Jim finished in first place with a great score of 40 points finishing two points ahead of Yury Pogiba on 38 points. I was in the same group as Yury who needed a par on the 9th for 26 points. Sadly, he made a bogey for 25! Third place went to the consistent Johan Bjarnle on handicap with 37 points. Unfortunately, no photo of Bill Casey who won the dressed prize. I would have to say that the Men were completely outdone by the Ladies in the best dressed competition. Perhaps that is how it should be – but I think we need to be a little closer.

Monthly Ranking Sunday March 2nd sponsored by Abbeygate Insurance

Unfortunately, the Ranking was postponed after the rains on Friday and the forecast of more rain on Sunday. he weather forecasters are now reviewing what went wrong. Below some photos of what happened on Friday.

You will be all glad to know that the greenkeeping staff have done a great job in getting the course back into the shape we are accustomed to. Many thanks to them all.

Charity Event – Wednesday March 12th

There will be a Charity Texas Scramble in aid of Centro Contigo, a children’s Charity that we support based in La Línea de la Concepción.

The event is sponsored by Cornelia Busch, and others, so please enter a team or individually and we will make up teams for this very worthy cause.

There will be a small cocktail and prize-giving afterwards, as well as various challenges and raffles to raise funds for the charity. Information is on the image. We look forward to your entries.
