Up to what age can children travel for free by train in Kazakhstan
Tengrinews.kz - Summer is travel season, and Kazakhstan’s national railway operator is reminding parents of the rules for traveling with children by train.
According to JSC “Passenger Transportation,” one child under the age of 7 (that is, until they turn 7) can travel for free without a separate seat. Once the child turns 7, a ticket is required.
“To occupy a separate seat, a child ticket must be purchased. If a family is traveling with multiple children under 7, only one child per adult can travel for free. Child tickets must be purchased for the others,” the company said.
Child train tickets
Children between the ages of 7 and 15 are eligible to travel with a child ticket, which costs 50 percent of the full adult fare.
“From the age of 15, a full adult ticket must be purchased. Teenagers aged 15 and over may travel alone but must carry a notarized letter of consent from their legal guardian,” the company added.
Travel between countries
International travel follows separate rules.
“Children under 5 can travel for free without a separate seat. Children aged 5 to 10 travel at the child fare. Children aged 10 to 15 pay 50 percent of the full fare within Kazakhstan, but the full fare when traveling in other countries,” the company said.

The company also reminded passengers that when traveling with a parent, a child’s birth certificate or passport must be shown when purchasing tickets and boarding the train.
“If a child is accompanied by someone who is not their legal guardian, a notarized letter of permission from both parents is required,” the statement said.
The national rail operator also strongly advises following safety rules and ensuring children are always supervised by adults.
