Ten new reservoirs to be built in Kazakhstan

Tengrinews.kz – Ten new reservoirs will be built in southern Kazakhstan, according to the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.

Plans through 2028

Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, speaking at a public meeting with residents of the Zhambyl Region, summarized the irrigation season and presented key regional projects.

According to the Comprehensive Water Sector Development Plan until 2028, ten new reservoirs will be constructed and three existing ones reconstructed in the region. Specialists will also inspect 45 hydraulic structures.

In 2026, the ministry will begin construction of the Akmol and Kalguty reservoirs, as well as the reconstruction of Teris-Ashchybulak and Karakonyz reservoirs. The regional akimat is already developing design and estimate documentation for seven new projects.

Reconstruction of irrigation canals

Local residents raised questions about the repair of irrigation canals. According to Nurzhigitov, a project is currently underway to reconstruct 76 canals with a total length of 415 kilometers across five districts. This will improve irrigation water supply for more than 24,000 hectares of farmland.

Additionally, 23 canal reconstruction projects are nearing completion, which will provide water to another 19,700 hectares of cropland. By the end of the year, five more projects totaling over 103 kilometers in length are expected to be completed.

Earlier, in April, it was reported that four new reservoirs will be built in Kazakhstan and four existing ones will be reconstructed. Plans also include the reconstruction and overhaul of 115 canals, including a project to replenish the Astana Reservoir.
