Future Parliament and referendum: new reform proposals presented to Tokayev

Tengrinews.kz – The President has reviewed proposals on constitutional reform that are being submitted, Akorda reports.
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held another working meeting on parliamentary reform with State Counsellor Erlan Karin and Presidential Aide for Legal Affairs Yerzhan Zhienbayev.
Erlan Karin informed the Head of State that at the meeting of the Working Group held on 9 January, basic approaches were developed to defining the status, powers and functions of the future unicameral Parliament, as well as its interaction with other branches of power.

“At the next meeting, scheduled for 15 January, the powers of the new Parliament in ensuring the functioning of key state institutions will be discussed. Yerzhan Zhienbayev briefed the Head of State on new proposals regarding the constitutional reform that are being received from members of the Working Group and the public,” the Akorda statement says.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stressed the need to take into account all opinions and initiatives expressed. The President also stated that the final decision on the constitutional reform will be made by the citizens of our country through a nationwide referendum.
It should be noted that since the launch of the special “Parliamentary Reform” section on the state e-Otinish platform and the Egov service, around 500 proposals have been received. Work continues to compile and analyse the proposals and initiatives submitted by citizens, experts and public organisations.
At previous meetings of the Working Group on parliamentary reform, issues related to the formation of the future unicameral Parliament and the implementation of its legislative functions were discussed.
