Will June 1 become a public holiday in Kazakhstan? Ministry of Labor’s position

Tengrinews.kz – Minister of Labor and Social Protection Askabek Yertayev commented on the possibility of introducing another public holiday in Kazakhstan — June 1.
On the sidelines of the Senate, journalists asked the minister whether June 1 could become a public holiday.

"This year we do not plan to raise this issue. It will be considered after joint positions are developed with a number of ministries, probably next year. For now, this issue has been removed from the agenda," the minister said.

He added that the issue of additional public holidays will be raised periodically because there is public demand.

"It is difficult to say whether this day will become a public holiday, but it will be discussed," Yertayev emphasized.

According to him, there are no critical obstacles to introducing the holiday, but any additional day off creates a burden for employers.

"This is discussed with social partners and employers. Any public holiday means additional payments and calculations. If everyone agrees and the calculations are transparent, then the initiative will be supported," the minister added.

Earlier, Vice Minister of Labor and Social Protection Viktoria Shegai confirmed that Kazakhstanis will not have a day off on August 30 this year. The new Constitution Day in Kazakhstan is now March 15 — the day when citizens supported its draft in a referendum.
