Tragedy in the Caspian: Tokayev thanks Putin for condolences

Tengrinews.kz – The Head of State expressed gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin for his words of condolence over the tragic deaths of Kazakh servicemen during exercises in the Caspian Sea, citing Akorda.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev noted that, at this difficult time for the country, Kazakhstan especially values the sincere sympathy and solidarity of the Russian leader and the people of Russia.

Tragedy in Mangystau Region

On September 24, servicemen were swept into the Caspian Sea during naval exercises in Mangystau Region. They were carrying out training and combat tasks on the Caspian coast when the weather suddenly worsened and the wind intensified.

Initially, it was reported that 19 servicemen had been swept into the sea. Later, the Mangystau Region akimat clarified the figure as 17 people.

At present, it is known that 12 people died, while three were rescued. One of the rescued servicemen is in hospital. The search for the remaining servicemen is continuing. Rescuers have been sent to the scene.

A government commission has been created to investigate the tragedy. It is headed by Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev. The commission is to establish the causes of the tragedy and assist the families of the deceased.

A pre-trial investigation has been launched into the deaths of the servicemen, the Prosecutor General’s Office reported. Investigators are establishing all the circumstances of what happened.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev expressed deep condolences to the families and loved ones of the servicemen who died. On September 25, the Head of State declared a day of mourning.
