The Philippine National Police (PNP) leads the observance today of the first anniversary of the Mamasapano debacle in which 44 Special Action Force (SAF) commandos of the PNP were killed. It does seem strange that the Mamasapano incident refuses to die down after all these months. There have been exhaustive inquiries in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, by the Department of Justice and the National Bureau of Investigation, by the PNP itself. The government has honored two of the 44 SAF men who fell at Mamasapano with the Medal of Valor, the highest honor in the PNP. The government says the 44 families have received over P80 million in death benefits from various agencies, including the Office of the President.
