The world’s 1.6 billion Muslims started fasting yesterday, Monday, following a common Ramadan calendar adopted recently by an international body of Islamic experts to end the 60-year-old dispute on the precise start and end of the yearly month-long religious duty. Muslim Filipino clerics confirmed Sunday night the sighting in Malaysia of the new moon that signaled the start of the month-long Ramadan fasting on Monday for the followers of Islam. “The new moon was officially sighted in Malaysia and (we) hereby announced…that tomorrow, 6th of June, 2016 is the first day of Ramadan 1437,” said Dr. Maulana Fatani Abdul Malik, head of the Royal Majlis Ulama and Council of Elders based in Batangas.
