Speaker Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte Jr. is fully supportive of the full-blown implementation of a national identification (ID) system not only to improve the country’s security landscape, but also to improve public access to government services. The outgoing House chief also challenged his colleagues in the incoming 17th Congress to roll up their sleeves to pass a law that would immediately effect the implementation of a national ID system. “I have always been in favor of a national ID system. I fully support it,” he said. He recalled that during the 16th Congress, the Lower Chamber was able to pass on second reading a bill mandating the implementation of a national ID system covering all Filipinos, including those who live and stay in foreign countries.
