A cannon’s report rang out near the veranda of Dorothea Benton Frank’s beach house on Sullivan’s Island. A handful of students and their professors had gathered at the novelist’s home to celebrate a shot across the bow of the literary scene with a literal shot into the Atlantic Ocean.
