Previously, the bank released external debt statistics 90 days after the end of each reporting quarter. Now, in addition to these reports, a preliminary estimate will be published quarterly on the last day of the month following the reporting quarter, alongside the preliminary balance of payments data.

According to the latest figures, Kazakhstan’s external debt stood at $165.63 billion as of January 1, 2025. This includes $91 billion in direct investment-related intercompany debt,$13.2 billion in banking sector debt ($2.4 billion owed by the National Bank), $12.7 billion in government debt, and $45.5 billion in debt from other sectors.

For comparison, Kazakhstan’s external debt was $161.16 billion as of January 1, 2023, rising to $163.55 billion a year later.

External debt refers to the outstanding actual and unconditional obligations of residents to non-residents at a given point in time, requiring the repayment of principal and/or interest.
