Tokayev gave instructions after the tragedy at the mine in Ulytau
Tengrinews.kz – President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev drew attention to the "unacceptable state of affairs in the field of labor safety" in connection with the tragic incident at the mine of the Kazakhmys corporation and instructed the government to take measures, according to the press service of Akorda.
As stated in the report, there are cases of gross violation of established requirements, the facilities are poorly equipped with industrial safety systems. Companies do not invest enough in projects aimed at ensuring safe working conditions. All this leads to man-made accidents, deaths and injuries to workers.
The President instructed the government to take measures to ensure the safety of citizens involved in hazardous industries:
Conduct an audit of the facilities for their compliance with industrial safety standards.
Develop and implement modern safety systems at the specified facilities, including gas alarms, seismic sensors, positioning systems, and others.
Ensure digitalization at the facilities in terms of the introduction of automated forecasting and warning systems.
Based on the audit results, provide for an increase in investment in modern industrial safety systems by adjusting the work programs of subsoil users.
Tighten supervision and control mechanisms in the field of industrial safety.
These instructions of the Head of State have been placed under special control in the Presidential Administration.
Earlier, a rock mass collapse occurred in a mine at the Zhomart mine. As a result of the incident, 7 mine workers died.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev expressed condolences over the deaths of miners in the Ulytau region. The president instructed the government to conduct a thorough investigation into the causes of the incident.
Following an order from Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov, a special commission was established to investigate the causes of the collapse and provide assistance to those affected. The commission is led by Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev.
Then, the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that rescue teams had found the bodies of six workers, while the search for the seventh was ongoing. Later, the ministry confirmed that the body of the last victim had been recovered. It was reported that the remains of all seven miners were brought to the surface and handed over to law enforcement for forensic examination.
According to Kazakhmys' press service, preliminary data suggests that a natural gas explosion caused the accident at the Zhomart mine.
The corporation assured that the families of those who died at the Zhomart mine would receive the necessary assistance as provided by the collective agreement. For social and financial support, including compensation for moral damage, the families will receive a payment of ten times the employee's average annual salary, as well as more than 2 million tenge for funeral arrangements. Additionally, monthly payments for the loss of the breadwinner, coverage for children’s education, the repayment of loans and debts of the deceased workers, and other forms of assistance will be provided upon the request of family members.
The Ulytau region akimat (local administration) stated that it would also provide all necessary psychological and social support to the families and loved ones of the deceased workers.
