Applied Materials Inc. late Thursday reported its first-quarter earnings fell to $286 million, or 25 cents a share, from $348 million, or 28 cents a share, a year earlier. Excluding items, the maker of semiconductor manufacturing tools earned 26 cents a share. Revenue fell 5% to $2.26 billion while new orders dropped 6% to $2.28 billion. Nordstrom reported fourth-quarter revenues and earnings below expectations on Thursday, with weak guidance. The shares tanked as much as 7% in after-hours trading.

As part of its fourth-quarter earnings announcement, the upscale fashion retailer said it expects full-year adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of between $3.10 and $3.35, but analysts had expected up to $3.55, according to Bloomberg.
