CAIRO/PARIS - Egypt launched an official investigation into the disappearance of an EgyptAir flight on Thursday, heralding what safety experts called a daunting probe into the apparent loss of an Airbus jet with 66 people on board.

Gap is closing a bunch of stores and could lay off workers soon amid declining sales.

In its first-quarter earnings results on Thursday, the clothing retailer said that it is closing up to 75 Banana Republic stores.

Applied Materials Inc. shares rose in the extended session Thursday after the maker of equipment for the semiconductor industry topped Wall Street estimates in both quarterly results and outlook. Applied Materials shares advanced 4.6% to $20.75 on heavy volume. The company reported adjusted fiscal second-quarter earnings of 34 cents a share on revenue of $2.45 billion.
