Halcon Resources Corp announced yesterday that it is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as part of a restructuring agreement with creditors—a move that could wipe out $1.8 billion, or 65 percent, of its debt and $222 million of preferred stock equity.

A manhunt is underway for the suspect in a Massachusetts cop killing

A manhunt was underway on Sunday in central Massachusetts for a gunman who shot and killed a police officer during a traffic stop just after midnight, state police said.

Ronald Tarentino, a 42-year-old officer in Auburn, Massachusetts, was fatally shot around 12:30 a.m. EDT in the town, which is approximately 50 miles (80 km) west of Boston.

The shooter fled the scene in his vehicle, according to police.

A Japanese pop star waiting to perform at a venue in Koganei, Tokyo, was repeatedly knifed by an obsessive fan. Mayu Tomita, 20, was stabbed dozens of times in the neck and chest after refusing a gift and remains in a critical condition.  The Independent reports: The singer, who is a college student, suffered nearly two dozen stab wounds to her neck and chest and has yet to gain consciousness according to reports in the Japanese media.
