Antarctic explorer dies after falling short 30 miles of goal

0

British explorer Henry Worsley has died after abandoning his record solo crossing of Antarctica only 30 miles short of his goal, media reports said Monday. The 55-year-old former U.K. army officer was attempting to become the first person to traverse the Antarctic continent unaided, but was airlifted to Chile, where he had surgery for peritonitis. He suffered "complete organ failure," his widow said in a statement cited in reports, before dying on Sunday. Worsley completed 913 miles in 71 days, passing by the South Pole before falling prey to exhaustion and severe dehydration, the Guardian reported.
