‘Gadget Gang’ still on the run
A 70-man task team has been formed to hunt for the 'Gadget Gang' after they stole computers worth more than R1m.
|||Pietermaritzburg - A gang of thieves who stole more than R1-million worth of computers from three schools in Pietermaritzburg, are still on the run.
A 70-man task team has been formed to bring down the “Gadget Gang”, as they have been dubbed, in an effort to ensure that another theft does not occur.
The computer labs at three primary schools – Bisley, Athlone and Scottsville – were plundered on three consecutive nights, and security companies are still trying to figure out how the thieves bypassed the school alarm systems.
It is believed the thieves accessed the computer labs through the roof, by tracing the cables through various holes in the ceiling.
According to police, the gang would hit a school at around midnight, force open school gates, jam the alarm system, disconnect the CCTV cameras and steal computers before transporting them in a heavy goods truck.
Police have urged the public, if they come across people selling stolen computers or parts, to contact them immediately. – Pietermaritzburg Bureau
