Nigeria to become Africa’s economic hub in 2026 – Minister of Science
The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu hopes that Nigeria will become an economic hub of the continent by 2026.
Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu has commended President Muhammadu Buhari’s commitment towards economic diversification and said that the ministry exert every effort to use science and technology to grow and develop the nation’s economy.
Onu said this during the meeting with Managing Director for Programme Development and Technical Cooperation Division of the United Nation International Development Organization (UNIDO), Philippe Scholtes in Abuja at the weekend.

He also thanked UNIDO for its contribution around the world and in Nigeria in particular. The minister highly appreciated the strategic partnership between the organisation and the Government of Nigeria to grow energy and agro-business.
But appealed to UNIDO to pay special attention towards boosting agriculture sector that “will lift farmers out of poverty and tame rural-urban migration as well.”
Earlier, Scholtes has announced a $2.6 million support fund for rural electricity programme across the country: “We made the case. We obtained funding for 2.6 million dollars to help us demonstrate the small scale hydro power to powerhouse and factories in places that have not been reached by the electricity. This project funded by Global Environment Facility funds is meant to help countries address environment issues that can benefit the global communities.”

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Government of Nigeria will extend their collaboration on initiatives to help create employment opportunities, encourage inclusive private sector development and promote environmentally sustainable industrial practices in Nigeria.
