“I heartily congratulate all Christians as they commence Lent which is a season dedicated to fasting and prayers by Christian faithful.
“Prayers, no doubt, are very key to achieving our socio-economic objectives as they bring the hand of God to intervene in areas human strength and wisdom cannot prevail.
“We must therefore endeavour to ensure that the lessons of Lent which include sacrifice, spiritual and physical renewal – manifest not only in our individual lives but in all facets of our national life,” he said.

According to the Senate President, since Lent is one of the most important seasons of the church for penitence, introspection and stock-taking with a view to discover areas that require changes, it is equally time for us as a nation to renew ourselves spiritually and in all ramifications.
He prayed God to grant all Christians in particular and all Nigerians in general who are participating in the 40 day fast the physical and spiritual wherewithal to complete the exercise and to benefit immensely from the divine interventions in their lives and and the nation as a whole.
However, Fr Peter Atsewe, the Parish Priest of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Parish, Gwarimpa in Abuja according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said Christians should use the opportunity of this Lenten season to re-assess their lifestyles.
He said that Lenten season helps us to know our identity and check in retrospect, to know our Christian living.
“We lose our Christian identity, if we go through the year without the Lenten season.
“I advice Christians to make positive impact on individuals and the nation as a whole by living exemplary lifestyles continuously; let it not be that we are just acting it in this season,” he said.
Pastor Emoni Williams of Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Glorious People’s Assembly Parish Jikwoyi, Abuja also tasked Christians to pray for Nigeria’s prosperity.
Apostle James Elohor, the Senior Pastor of Shekinah Impact Ministry, Abuja, also admonished Christians to make God a constant factor in their lives and not only in times of adversity.
