J JS Lee sets out to empower her customer at London Fashion Week with contemporary shapes and luxurious fabrics

A wardrobe for a thoroughly modern working woman was among the first of the collections on offer at London Fashion Week today.

Topping the bill at the capital's five day event, Seoul-born designer Jackie JS Lee presented a showcase with which she set out to empower her customer.

Citing the liberation of women and the notion of independence, JS Lee combined a silhouette synonymous with late Eighties power dressing with a 21st Century sensibility.

Accordingly, masculine trouser suits in shades of deep scarlet and mustard yellow were showcased alongside belted two-piece skirt suits.

Typical office codes, including pencil skirts and pussy bow blouses, were repurposed in luxurious fabrics and were tailored in a looser, more contemporary shape.

A series of silk leg warmers which gave the illusion of trousers when worn underneath dresses further harnessed the idea that these were clothes for a fashion-conscious woman at work.

But JS Lee had been looking further back for inspiration too.

Victorian architecture and furnishings also influenced the collection. Appliquéd tassel detailing was presented alongside high fringed collars. A series of heavy oversized tweed overcoats, cut from brightly coloured French wool, stood out as a point of difference in an otherwise utilitarian collection.

The pieces, among the most colourful on display today, nodded to the changeable silhouette of the early 19th Century.

While JJS Lee is among the lesser known additions to the schedule, LFW has long valued emerging talent.

Joining her on the schedule today are rising stars Samantha McCoach of Scottish label Le Kilt and former Fashion East designer Ryan Lo. Tomorrow, big hitters J.W. Anderson and Henry Holland will unveil their latest collections.
