Christchurch is a perversely apt place for Test cricket's No. 1 ranking to go on the line. The city is like the points table: its once familiar architecture is gone, nothing concrete has replaced it yet and everyone is feeling a little disoriented. Test cricket is in such a state of flux that no-one is unabashed enough morally to claim the top rating for themselves, or for that matter to nominate another.
