– WAEC reveals reason for providing special centres for albinos
– Adds that students whose states had yet to settle their school fees will still be allowed to sit for exam
Albinos sitting for this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will have the luxury of using a special centre for the process.
The Punch reports that the public affairs officer of WAEC, Demianus Ojijeogu, informed that students whose state governments were yet to clear their registration fees might still be allowed to sit for the examination.
The council also stated that provision would be made for the right lighting and ventilation in the centres, adding that albinism is an inherited disorder in persons with complete or partial absence of melanin (a substance responsible for the hair and skin colour in humans).
“The initiative is as a result of the forward-looking approach of the council. We were not pressurised to do it. Schools are still uploading the registration form of their pupils right now and we have made provision on the form for the candidates to indicate any physical challenge.
“We have been making provision for blind candidates to use Braille and once we have candidates with albinism, we will make provision of a special centre for them.
“I cannot say how many centres we will have across the states because registration is still ongoing. But once we have candidates from a state indicating that he or she is an albino, we shall make special provision for them. Their centres will have the right ventilation and lighting to make sure they are not discriminated against,” Ojijeogu
