YFT: Freedom of Religion
– What does freedom of religion entails?
– We all have the right to live the way we want and should be mindful not to cross the boundaries laid down by our Creator
– Nigeria is a multi-religious and multi-cultural nation
Several inter-religious meetings have been held in Nigeria to support the need for freedom of religion. The other reasons for this meetings are to foster oneness among the different religious denominations in the country and to show everyone who belongs to a particular faith that he or she is a neighbour to the other individual who professes another religion.some

It is a common sight to see inside some commercial vehicles in cities like Lagos and Ibadan some Christian faithfuls preaching and singing praises and worship. Likewise, some advocates of this religion go about every street and residential areas very early in the morning spreading the gospel they proclaim.

This shows that every individual should show respect to the other person’s religion even if both of them share different religious beliefs. However in Nigeria, there are often clashes between people of various religions. This ugly trend has continued on and on for years without a real solution in sight.
Quoting again from the Glorious Qur’an from the last verse in Chapter 108, Allah told Prophet Muhammad to tell the people of Makkah, now in Saudi Arabia that, “your religion for you and my religion for me.”
This verse is highly instructive for all mankind. No one should continue ringing a bell to preach if the other party is not interested in his sermon. Anybody that practises a particular religion should not try to force other people to accept his faith, even if such people are his relatives or loved ones. The reason for this is that it has become a distasteful habit to see people force their religions on others especially in Nigeria.
Prophet Muhammad (may the peace of Allah be upon his noble soul) said in one of the Hadiths in the 40 Hadiths of Nawawi that: “Do not make life difficult for yourselves and do not make it difficult for others.”
This is what everybody should hold on to in order not to do things that people of other faiths abhor when they do them.
