Couple adopts the “girl in the window” despite there is “something wrong with her”

After their boys have all grown up and lived independently, couple Bernie and Dianne knew that they still want to raise another child – and this time a daughter, by adoption. They eagerly attended an adoption event where they were surrounded with healthy and playful children who all wanted affection and a real family. But Diane’s attention was not in any kid playing around her. She has her eyes on a black-and-white photo of a girl on the bulletin board. That moment, she felt that she already found the daughter she has always wanted.

The couple decided to ask about the girl, but the caseworkers told them that they wouldn’t want to adopt her. “There’s something wrong with her,” they said. This only made them question more, but they never realized that the situation really is that horrible.

Finaly, Bernie and Dianne learned the girl’s name – Danielle. She was found inside a Florida home wearing a diaper, in a dark room the size of a closet. She was seven years old by that time but weighed in at 46 pounds and couldn’t walk, talk or even eat food. Doctors said her development was still that of a 6-month-old baby. She was a feral child.

It was police detective Mark Holste who found Danielle neglected in the midst of the filth. “I’ve been in law enforcement for 27 years now, and this is by far, bar none, the worst case of child neglect I’ve ever come across in my career,” he said. When Danielle was taken to the hospital for immediate care, she was really in bad shape.

Danielle’s biological mother spent 26 hours in jail and was sentenced to two years of house arrest followed by three years of probation. She also lost parental rights. Danielle was then transferred to a group home, and that explains her photo at the bulletin board during the adoption event.

Despite her past and her behavioral issues, the couple knew that they really want to have Danielle as their daughter. According to them, it feels like God placed her in their lives. And so, in 2007, Danielle officially became a Lierow and got her first taste and experience of a real family and genuine love. “Having Dani in my life, it has been a roller coaster ride, and I don’t want to get off,” Bernie said.
