It was the week that saw the Thames freeze over and Jarvis Cocker interrupt Michael Jackson’s Brit Awards performance.

There was more than just a mild frost in the February of 1929 when the Thames partially froze, and thick ice at Metropolitan’s Water Boards had to be smashed to ensure London’s taps continued to run.

Controversy at the Brit Awards in 1996 began when singer Jarvis Cocker jumped on stage while Michael Jackson was performing.

Cocker said he was protesting over Jackson’s “over-blown and self-aggrandising” performance.

Seven years later, February saw hundreds of thousands protest at the prospect of invading Iraq.

This week in London trawls the archives to bring you the key events that have taken place in the capital during the past century.
