APC national secretary, Mai Mala Buni
The national secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Mai Mala Buni, has said that the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has refused to learn from its past mistakes that brought the party to ruin. He identified the PDP’s penchant for impunity, non-adherence to due process and gross disregard for internal party democracy.
Mai Mala Buni stated this in an interview with the Daily Trust, published on Thursday, March 1, 2016.
The APC’s national secretary also dismissed reports suggesting an internal crisis in the APC and charged the PDP to prevail on its members and government officials under the PDP administration involved in looting of the country’s resources to return the stolen wealth back to government coffers.
Buni said the PDP’s 16 years of waste only succeeded in creating for the party a crisis of confidence and dishonour. He said the PDP, after 16 years of waste, maladministration, incompetence, massive corruption and ineptitude, cannot pose any threat to the APC.

“You will also recall that security to lives and property in the last 16 years was brought to its lowest ebb. Nigeria also recorded its worst infrastructural decay, while young graduates were left without jobs.
“The ugly and unfortunate Immigration employment scam is still very fresh in our memory, when government officials defrauded jobless youth of millions of Naira and some were killed in the process.
“These and many more atrocities committed under the PDP administration have, and will continue to distance Nigerians from the party.
“It is therefore careless, fraudulent and misleading for anybody to think that Nigerians will contemplate entrusting their mandate quite so soon to PDP for another round of maladministration and hopelessness. Therefore, to think of PDP wrestling power from APC is a mission impossible,” he said.
Reacting to the recent boast by the new PDP chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, that he will bring back PDP members that defected to the APC, Buni said Sheriff’s wishes were ”funny and laughable”.
Buni said one of the major problems that caused the PDP to lose its glory was doing things wrongly and with impunity, without regard to due process and internal democracy.
According to him, it is a known fact that many founding members and notable politicians left PDP for lack of this major ingredient of democracy.
He said they defected to the APC which is a party guided by due process, the rule of law and internal democracy and also contributed to the overwhelming victory of the party in 2015.

“Surprisingly, the adoption of Sen. Sheriff as national chairman indicates the resurfacing of this ugly trend that dissipated the PDP. The controversy that greeted his emergence was so glaring; the process was rejected and rubbished, thereby generating irreconcilable differences between the Board of Trustees, Governors Forum, Legislators Caucus, former ministers and stakeholders.
“Presently, the party [PDP] and its leadership are suffering serious image and credibility problem to have the capacity to bring anybody back to its fold. However, if this [Sheriff’s] claim is anything to go by, this means bringing back former President Olusegun Obasanjo who publicly tore his PDP membership card. It also means bringing back former Vice President Atiku Abubakar who told the world that he has finally left the party for good.
“It also means making Senate President Bukola Saraki, Speaker Yakubu Dogara, Audu Ogbeh, Barnabas Gemade, Rotimi Ameachi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Nasiru El-Rufai, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Samuel Ortom, Aliyu Magatakarda Wammako and host of others to leave APC for PDP. Do you see this happening? I think, this is just a figment of his imagination. There is no such capacity and honour in the party leadership to make this dream work.
“In a nutshell, APC is not losing a sleep over the vituperation of politicians seeking relevance, and deliberately diverting public attention from the problems bedeviling the party [PDP],” he said.
The APC’s national secretary said President Muhammadu Buhari’s APC-led government has risen to defend the lives and property of the citizenry.
Buni added that Nigeria has successfully battled Boko Haram, and security has returned to the hitherto forbidden areas in the north-east.
