Hazardous chemicals dumped in Pretoria

Two people fell ill after inhaling chemicals dumped on the side of the road in Centurion.

Johannesburg – Chemicals that cause dizziness when inhaled were found dumped on the side of the road in Centurion in Pretoria on Wednesday, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said two people were assessed after they inhaled fumes from the unknown chemicals found dumped at the Old Johannesburg and Wierda Road intersection.

ER24 paramedics, along with Fire and Hazardous Materials teams, responded to the scene after receiving reports of patients experiencing dizziness near the location.

“On scene, paramedics and rescue teams found several metal barrels lying strewn along the roadside with some of the unknown content spilled across the scene. A hazardous materials team immediately began to secure the scene as to ensure that no further contamination occurred. Two patients were assessed after they apparently inhaled some of the fumes, but were later discharged,” he said.

Local authorities were investigating the apparent chemical spill.
