Authorities have identified the taxi driver allegedly responsible for the death of a Cape Town traffic officer.

The suspect, who fled the accident scene on Tuesday morning along Jakes Gerwel Drive, is facing four warrants of arrest.

Sources say the man’s father, who is the owner of the taxi, reported him to authorities.

The City of Cape Town has offered a R50 000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the taxi driver following the death of Mogamat Faried Galant, 35.

According to the City, the driver was travelling on Jakes Gerwel Drive in the direction of Mitchells Plain when he lost control of the vehicle and crossed the road into oncoming traffic, hitting Galant’s car.

Four other vehicles were involved in the collision.

Galant, a dad of three, started working at Hillstar Traffic department in Ottery at the beginning of the month.

Mayco member for Safety and Security JP Smith said the taxi driver was still on the run, but they have identified him.
