Gowon acknowledged that he was the father of Musa who was deported to Nigeria from the USA in 2015 after spending 22 years in a United States prison.
Gowon and Okongwu were friends in the 1960s but there was a legal dispute concerning the paternity of Musa which dragged all the way to the Supreme Court in which the socialite Okongwu won.
Before the judgment could be executed however, Musa was apprehended by United States law enforcement officials in Dallas on the charge of importing heroin and was sentenced to 40 years in prison. He pursued graduate school while in prison and was released in November 2015 due to his good behaviour.
